LIECHTENSTEIN

Withholding tax

According to the EU Savings Tax Directive (2003/48/EC), all Member States or banks of the respective member states are expected to automatically exchange information on interest payments.

A special regulation was arranged between Belgium, Luxembourg and Austria, according to which these countries are not required to exchange information relating to savings income detailed in this directive.  This rule applies if they apply a withholding tax to this income and transfer it to the member state, in which the beneficial owner is resident. The rate of the withholding tax amounts to 15 % until 2007, 20 % starting January 2008, and 35 % starting 2011.

The EU directive does not apply to payments made to natural persons. For this reason, it also does not apply to foundations, establishments and companies limited by shares in Liechtenstein.
